HALE MRI measurement and balancing: what is the difference?

Measurement and balancing often appear in the same service discussion, but they answer different questions. Understanding the distinction helps you discuss your propeller’s repair plan more clearly.

Measurement looks at geometry

HALE MRI stands for Measurement Recording Instrument. The system records three-dimensional position data to evaluate geometry such as pitch, camber, rake, and track. This helps identify differences within and between blades and guides correction work.

Balancing addresses imbalance

Static and dynamic balancing evaluate imbalance in different ways. Their purpose is distinct from changing blade pitch or geometry. A service assessment considers whether balancing is appropriate alongside the propeller’s condition and any other work required.

The two can support the same repair

A damaged propeller may need blade correction followed by measurement and balancing as appropriate. The right sequence and scope depend on inspection findings and the specifications being used for that job.

Ask for the details relevant to your vessel

Discuss the proposed correction, how the propeller will be reviewed, and what reports are included. Existing specifications and previous service records can provide useful reference information.
